Marshall
"Digger" Helm (1938 - 2018) was a graduate of East Bakersfield High
School. Growing up in the family business, Greenlawn Cemetery, he
became a nationally ranked motorcycle racer in both flat track and TT.
He promoted speedway racing at the Kern County Fairgrounds, owned the
Bakersfield Bandits speedway team and, after retiring from motorcycle
racing, raced stock cars and modifieds at Mesa Marin and
Bakersfield Speedway.
Also a talented musician, he often played with local bands and was
friends with Merle Haggard and Buck Owens. Known for his generosity in
helping other racers, he also was involved with philantropic
organizations, once purchasing a K9 service dog for the Kern County
Sheriff's Department. He is in the Hot Shoe Hall of Fame and
Trailblazers Hall of Fame.h
